Tunnel 22 | Route of the Hiawatha
Near the border of Idaho and Montana you will find the stunning Route of the Hiawatha.
The route is a rails-to-trails path consisting of 10 tunnels and 7 trestles over 15 miles descending 1000 feet through mountain valleys and stunning pine forests. Constructed in the 1890’s the railroad connected the Eastern United States to the Pacific Northwest via the Northern Pacific Railroad. It was finally converted to a trail in the 1970s.
I rented a bike at the near by ski resort for the day, and while a big thunderstorm rolled in and out, this was a minor inconvenience to the experience of traversing the trail. Biking through 10 pitch black tunnels with only a headlamp is an experience I will never forget.
